L’évolution de l’espace entre 1.0 and 0.0

I guess if you’re here reading this, then most of you have read the devBlog. Wormholes!!! Talk about cool stuff!

I feel someone has to put in a parallel between Eve-Online and (the original space-faring gang) Star Trek — particularly the Deep Space 9 series. That was originally a great premise for exploration of a alternate world, and it really worked for the series. Eve-Online had a stroke of genius bringing this in at a later point in game development.

One of the first things I thought of before downloading the client for my first trial was, “finally, a game about true exploration!”. That really got me going – new life forms, communication with them, trade with them, warring against them, etc…. that was truly my goal when I saw the name Eve. So I downloaded the game. I can’t say I was disappointed about not having a lot of exploration to do within the game, since there are about 5000 systems to choose from. There’s something to be said about being in a space corporation, being a miner, exploring the region of space you’re in, and so forth.

BUT, I also quickly realized that being stuck in empire space was going to be a long haul; with over 230,000 other players locked into a (not tiny, but) limited space, there’s isn’t much room left for exploration. Developing a corporate world was going to be the upside of things, and occasional sparring is something to look forward to, but yet would seldom happen. Basically, you just watch your 6 all the time. So when you look for a job in space, what you want to do is really specialize in one area of the game, and try to develop the rest alongside that.

But exploring the unknown regions of space… now THAT is something exciting. Oddly enough, I was actually in the middle of training my Astrometrics and scanner-handling skills, and getting documented on space probing. This is a perfect opportunity (for me, at least) to branch out and specialize. Besides, there IS a nice incentive to exploring wormholes… Tech III technology (read: ISK).

This is one part I’m fairly anxious to read about – how to obtain the technology, reverse-engineer it, mass produce new items, and become the number 1 Tech III prodder this side of the quadrant. I can’t wait to see all this stuf, nor can I wait to read the next devBlog… truly, exciting times in Eve.

Better warm up your Micro Warp Drives and loadout your ships… otherwise I’ll be the one right in front of you!
